About theCounseling in the College Selection Process ClassesOK-- a quick quiz. From 0-100, about what percentage of a high school counselor's daily work involves helping students make decisions about college? Would you believe 20%? Right-- a recent survey by the National Association for College Admission Counseling shows counselors spend the equivalent of one day every week working just on college issues. Now-- here's the second question. From 0-100, what percentage of a high school counselor's training prepares them to help students and families with college? Would you believe less than 1 percent? According to a recent poll by the Michigan Association for College Admission Counseling, high school counselors were given about 5 hours of instruction on the college selection process, out of the 675 hours of their counselor training. When you consider the average high school counselor has a case load of about 530 students, you can see why it might be hard for counselors to help you with college as much as they'd like to. That's why the College is Yours Workshop for Counselors was born. Counselors will get detailed information on how to help students make good decisions about college. In addition to all of the topics covered in the book, the College is Yours workshop will talk about the theory behind college selection, helping students with special learning needs, working with artistic and athletic students, setting up a counseling office, working with college admissions offices, keeping track of all those applications, working with 500 students at once, and more. Of course, it might take more than 600 words to cover all of these topics-- but counselors leaving the workshop will have a great grasp on the essentials for being even better prepared to help their students. The College is Yours counselor workshop is up and ready to go-- for information on dates, location, and cost, click here, and get ready to become an even better college expert.
